Mill Road History Trail

HistoryWorks has produced a FREE trail of Mill Road narrated by the famous poet, Michael Rosen, which starts on Parker's Piece and the astonishing Victorian Feast of 1838 when 15,000 people were fed plum pudding!  It then takes you along a journey learning about the Victorian History of Mill Road to sites of interest such as the Gaol, (the former prison), the Windmill, the Work House, the Bath House, the Victorian School,  the Eagle Iron Foundry & Coprolite Mill; and ends way down in Romsey at the site of the former Victorian Isolation Hospital for Infectious Diseases.   We stop off at these places to tell the history of the location in context, which you can read online or listen to the script voiced by Michael Rosen using any digital device, and we also often share a poem or song or two about the place too!!

JOIN THE MILL ROAD HISTORY SOCIETY, EXPLORE 'CAPTURING CAMBRIDGE' ONLINE, AND DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH INTO RECORDS AND NEWSPAPERS AND BOOKS ON A VISIT TO THE LOCAL HISTORY ARCHIVE AT THE CAMBRIDGESHIRE COLLECTION IN THE LIBRARY SITUATED ON THE 3RD FLOOR IN THE GRAND ARCADE

HistoryWorks has designed this series of history trails, using a variety of local history sources, and translated these into scripts which have been co-created with the historian, Helen Weinstein, and narrated by the poet, Michael Rosen, recorded and edited with colleague, Jon Calver.  These are for local residents and traders, school teachers and their students, to freely use to explore the local area.  For this trail, if you want to find out more, recommend your going to the website Capturing Cambridge, and the invaluable reports of the Mill Road History Society. To see photographs of the area from past decades, and read newspaper articles relating to particular incidents, do go to the archive at the Cambridgeshre Collection, top floor of the public library in the Grand Arcade.  There is lots more to explore and to learn!   We've used learning about the past of Cambridge to devise a project called 'History Beneath Your Feet' wherey Michael Rosen has composed lyrics set to music by our team at Historyworks, plus we've new silly songs co-created by Helen Weinstiein and Dave Cohen from CBBC's Horrible Histories who write all the HH songs!! These poems and songs are free for all to enjoy, perform, mash-up, mirror - find on our Creating My Cambridge site...
